Recent studies published in Science reveal that less than 4% of the oceans remain untouched by human activity, an alarming statistic that demands our immediate attention. Here are some of the key challenges we face:

ECOSYSTEM: Destructive practices, such as bottom trawling, are causing irreparable damage to marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and deep-sea habitats.

POLLUTION: The oceans are becoming increasingly a dumping ground for a variety of pollutants, such as mercury, plastic waste and chemicals. This pollution not only threatens marine life and ocean habitats, but is also a serious threat to human health.

WASTE: Marine resources have the potential to sustainably feed millions of people. However, we are wasting these valuable resources due to inadequate fishing practices, resulting in a negative impact on global food security.

Testimony

Life is about flow, not about the things we have. Water in a tank spoils. The flowing water gives life.

The blue economy is estimated to be worth more than US$1.5 trillion per year globally. It provides over 30 million jobs and supplies a vital source of protein to over three billion people.
